A friend of mine is coming over from abroad, spks pretty good english. Thing is she has to go from London Liverpool street station (where the train stops having brought her from Stansted Airport) and she has to go into the underground to get to London Waterloo to get the train straight to Fratton. Just called a taxi co to see how much it would cost to get from Liverpool Street to Waterloo, and they said £15!!! (its only a two mile journey)( I wanted to plan it so she wouldn't have to go on underground) so extortionate and out of the question. Is it complicated on the underground? What line should she take etc... how long a journey, how many stops etc... and once she gets to Waterloo does she have to wander around looking for the train to bring her to Fratton/Pompey?. I am not a Londoner and am scared for her - don't want her to get lost etc... can anyone help with simple instructions on what to do to get from Liverpool St to Waterloo and to theplatform to get the train to Fratton? Thx

  1. Central Line (red) to Tottenham Court Road

Then Northern Line (black) to Waterloo

The colours refer to the lines as shown on the standard Underground Map (link below)

Journey time is about 5-10 minutes and fare will be about £2.00 - there are automatic ticket machines. Both stations are in Zone 1. Trains are every 2-3 minutes during rush hour and every 7-8 minutes the rest of the time.

On arrival at Waterloo, follow the directions to the Main Line Station which has an enormous concourse, but the train times are shown by digital indicators above the platforms.

Quickest way from Waterloo to Fratton is to take the fast train to Havant, change there and take the stopping train to Fratton.

    Bon Voyage

  2. Pay the taxi, its too complicated a journey from Liverpool St to Waterloo, and its further than two miles.

  3. Go down to the local pub. Tell the lads that if they do a whip around and come up with 30 pounds that you will introduce them to your friend. Pay the taxi. Keep the 15 pounds and buy your friend a welcome drink at the bar and tell her you are going to introduce her to some really nice guys and that she will be the centre of attention. Everyone wins.

  4. I did the journey from Stansted to Portsmouth last year. At Liverpool Street I took the Central Line (westbound) to Bank (one stop) then the Waterloo & City Line to Waterloo (one stop). The fare is £4. At the top of the escalator at Waterloo, if she turns right she will be right alongside the big departure board. All trains to Portsmouth stop at Fratton. Portsmouth trains usually leave from the middle platforms (5 to 15).

  5. Hello. Your friend could also think about using a London bus. Apparently the no 26 goes straight from Liverpool St (Bus stop L) to Waterloo and it takes roughly the same time as on the underground (19 - 25 mins). Buses go every 6 - 10 mins during the day. A bus journey costs £2 if she hasn't got an oyster card. Tickets can be bought at the bus stop from a little machine and most of the time you need to do this before getting on a bus. If the machine is not working drivers will often let you get on and get the ticket at the next stop.  If she goes by bus she also will get a chance to see a bit of London and not have to drag her bags up and down escalators... I use the bus (not this one) everyday in London and find being above ground much more interesting and for the journey I do, it's often just as quick as the underground. It might be worth checking that there aren't any roadworks though - you can do this on the tfl website (see below).

  6. if shes such a good friend and you dont want her getting lost and your worryed about her, meet her at stansted, its only 2 miles, walk it, you can help her carry her things or take a cart, you can visit along the way, i know nothing of london, im from america, but thats what i would do.

  7. Meet her at Stansted.

  8. From Liverpool Street take the Central Line one stop to Bank then the Waterloo & City Line to Waterloo.  At weekends take the Circle Line to Embankment then the Northern or Bakerloo Lines to Waterloo. At Waterloo fast trains to Fratton operated by South West Trains leave on the hour and the half hour (the train deparing at 45 past the hour will be overtaken by the following trains on route); there are several illuminated departure boards on the station concourse plus 2 manned information points and sundry other supervisory staff milling around.

Please ignore the facecious drivel of the others.

Another easy route is  to take the Circle Line from Liverpool Street to Embankment station. Then cross the bridge (Waterloo Bridge, which is right outside the embankment station) to Waterloo station (which is just across the river). It's a five minute walk from station to station.

Tell her that Waterloo station is big enough (biggest in London) and that she will not miss it by mistake. It's right next to the roundabout at the south side of the bridge.

Then your friend can catch the train to Fratton.

Most Portsmouth trains stop at Fratton but she'll have to keep a close eye on the departure boards to find the right platform.

It's possible that the person who sells her the ticket may know which platform the next train will be from.

  10. From Liverpool St, take the Circle Line to Embankment, then the Northern or Bakerloo Line to Waterloo. (8 stops in all, and about 15mins journey time) It's best to ask at Waterloo for Fratton, as platform numbers change quite often.
