London Underground stations renamed after athletes for London 2012 Olympic Games
The London Underground has experienced a drastic change recently as the Transport for London has changed the names of a total of 361 subway stops.
The names of the underground stations have been changed from their previous titles to represent the names of the Olympic athletes that will be taking part in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.
The revamped map of the London underground is being called the Olympic Legends Map.
The designers of the new London underground map, Alex Trickett and David Brooks, both expressed themselves by giving the following joint statements, “There were heated debates and a few late changes of heart, but we are happy with the result: dozens of nations
represented, all 2012 Olympic sports accounted for, and Ali and Phelps, two of the greatest Olympians of all time.”
On the other hand, TfL released the following comments on the issue, “The map not only celebrates multiple gold medal winning athletes but also features other extraordinary athletes who may not have won an Olympic gold medal but are recognized for their
abilities or in some cases, famous defeats.”
The main Olympic stop at the London underground is now called Michael Phelps. Phelps has received the honour for being named for the most prestigious stop because of his accomplishments. Phelps, who is a swimmer, was able to earn himself a total of eight
gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Games.
By doing so, Phelps established the record of earning the highest number of gold medals in swimming in the Olympic Games. Apart from that, Phelps was a total of 14 Olympic medals overall.
Other stations that have been renamed after famous athletes include the Stratford International station which is now called Cassius Clay. Other athletes that are named in the London underground include Rafael Nadal, who has the honour of holding the gold
medal at the 2008 men's tennis singles event as well as Miguel Indurain who is the famous five times champion of Tour de France. Other names include those of Michael Jordan as well as Larry Bird.
The Olympic Games start from July 27.
