London Wasps’ Shaun Edwards denies Warriors Switch – Rugby news
London Wasps Head Coach, Shaun Edwards, has strongly denied the reports made in certain sections of the press that he is resigning as head coach from Adams Park. In a statement released on the club website dated May 20, the former Wigan Warriors star halfback
has turned down the claims made in tabloids.
David Parker, a reporter at a widely circulated newspaper, reported in the May 20th edition that Edwards is set to return to the Warriors as first team coach. Edwards had previously played for the Wigan Warriors from 1983 to 1997 in the Rugby Football League.
He made a record 467 appearances for the club and scored a massive 1,140 points.
The 44-year-old Edwards has helped the Warriors achieve a number of records which include winning eight Rugby Football League Championship titles and winning nine Rugby League Challenge Cups. His services for the Warriors earned Edwards a place in Wigan
Warriors Hall of Fame. Wigan born Edwards has also represented England at International level including the 1992 and 1995 Rugby League World Cups.
Few weeks back, Edwards had signed a new two-year contract with the Wasps and the rumours of a switch were uncertain. Commenting on his news to move to the Warriors, he said, “I am fully committed to Wasps and I am more determined than ever to get us back
into play-off contention next season.”
Edwards joined Wasps as backs coach and his involvement over the years has helped Wasps to achieve some remarkable achievements at the domestic level. This includes winning the domestic championship titles consecutively for three years. Edwards has also
worked with the Wales national rugby union team as assistant coach to former Wasps Director of Rugby, Warren Gatland.
Edwards has expressed hopes that with new signings, Wasps can certainly return to their glory at both domestic and European level. He said, "With the signings we have made we feel we have strengthened in the right positions and next season will be a fresh
start."
The newspaper report also said that Dean Ryan will assume the responsibilities of Director of rugby at the squad. London Wasps in their statement has turned down the speculations about the Director of Rugby. The statement read, “London Wasps would also like
to clarify that no decision has been made yet on the vacant Director of Rugby position, contrary to ongoing speculation. The club will make an official announcement in due course.”
In addition, Parker reported that Phil Greening is taking over as head coach at Wasps in place of Edwards
