London Wasps appoint Paul Turner as consultant attack and skills coach – Rugby news
English rugby union team, London Wasps, has appointed former Newport Gwent Dragons head coach, Paul Turner, as consultant attack and skills coach. Officials at the club have confirmed the appointed of Turner in a statement released on their website on Monday,
July 25.
Turner’s appointment is the London Wasps Director of Rugby, Dain Young’s, first coaching staff appointment of the season.
Commenting on Turner, Young said, “We are really pleased to introduce Paul to our plans for the new season and we believe that he will be an important addition to the coaching set-up. He will bring some fresh attacking ideas to the team and I think he can
make a big impact in our style of play this season.”
The 51-year-old Turner last coaching appointment was with the Welsh professional rugby union side Newport Gwent Dragons. He joined Dragons at the start of the 2005 season. Earlier in February this year, Turner was relieved of his duties by the Dragons’ management
following disciplinary issues. Earlier in his career, Turner had coaching stints with different sides for 11 seasons. In the past he has coached the Bedford, Sale Sharks, Gloucester Rugby, Saracens and Harlequins sides.
New bridge born Turner is a former Welsh Rugby Union player and has the honour of playing for Wales in three international matches and additionally has played for Barbarians.
Tuner has expressed his delight at joining the Wasps because of their impressive repute and standings in both Premiership and European competitions. He added, “Wasps have always been a club I admired and respected and I am delighted to be back coaching in
the Premiership.”
Commenting on his new role and the tasks that he will perform, Turner said, “The club has clearly put together a strong squad for next season with some highly talented attacking individuals and I am looking forward to helping shape the structure of how the
side plays.”
At the end of the 2010/11 Premiership season, Wasps added 10 new members to their squad in a bid to strengthen their squad for the 2011/12 season.
