London and Scotland : )?

Question

In september I am going to London and Scotland for two weeks and staying for a week in both.

Any ideas for what I should do?

Definately go to Edinburgh, Smart City Hostel is really nice and affordable. Make sure you visit the Jekyll and Hyde Pub and have a couple of the deadly sins cocktails.

Why spend so long in London?  It is after all just one city, Scotland is a country & there is far more to see there.  You can see most of the main tourist sites in London in 3 days max, but you'd need at least 3-4 weeks to see very site of interest in Scotland.

depends what you are into.  i'm 30 now, so my suggestions might not be what you are after!

i did this trip this time last year with my partner who lives in australia with me, but is british.  i've been to london about ten years back too.

scotland has some extremely beautiful and dramatic countryside the further north you go (it's my favourite place on earth).  i would wholeheartedly recommend getting out into the scottish countryside on a sunny day.  we stayed at a bed and breakfast then went out on a boat on loch ness and i fulfilled a childhood fantasy.  it was brilliant.

do the london eye - and you get a great view of the houses of parliament on the thames.  otherwise, pick up a travel book like lonely planet.  london is too numerous to list on here!

It depends on what you're in to, really.

In London, if you like the Arts, a big bonus is that a lot of the art galleries are effectively free - a couple of quid as a donation at the door usually does it.  Generally, the galleries are exceptional: if you like modern art, the Tate modern is great.  If you like the theatre, the National theatre on southbank often have cheap evenings, where you can pick up a ticket for about ten pounds.  

The London eye is pricey, but a good experience.

Feed the squirrels in St James's Park.

Go to the tower of london, and take a tour with a yeoman.

Go to Burrough market at southwark.

Have a glass of wine at Gordon's wine bar (it's an institution - near embankment station)

Attend a service in st paul's cathedral.

Take in the view of london from Hampstead heath - nice at night.

My biggest recommendation - go on some 'london walks'.  For around 4 pound, you can take a walking tour around london, on a theme of your choice. Popular ones are the 'ghost' themed walks, or the 'jack the ripper' walks - but really, most of them are fantastic, and you'll find parts of the city you just wouldn't see otherwise.  You can pick up the pamphlet at the airport (or many other places)

In scotland - again, it depends where you are and what you're into.  If in Edinburgh, definitely go on a night tour of the 'old city' underground - fascinating stuff.  Edinburgh castle is great.  There's also a science museumy type thing that was fun.  Walk up 'the hill' (you'll see what I mean - it's actually called Arthurs seat). Walk the golden mile, and drop in at the whisky shop near the castle. Marvel at how beautiful it is :)
