  1. Dublin in Ireland can lay claim to the world's largest sculpture The Spire which stands on the same spot as a previous monument Nelson's Pillar.  Nelson's pillar was a British monument erected to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar. This pillar was blown up by the IRA in 1966 and all that remains of it is Nelson's head which is now in the Dublin Civic Museum.

The present Spire which stands in O'Connell Street, the city's main thoroughfare was erected in 2003 is made of polished stainless steel. It stands 120 metres tall and three metres in diameter at its base, and weighs 126 tons. The Spire is seven times the height of the nearby G.P.O  A 140m crane (one of the largest ever assembled in Europe) was erected to assemble it.

The Spire has also been given the Irish name, An Tur Solais, which translates as The Spire of Light in English.  These might be the official names but Dubliners always have their own names for monuments and statues, it is known as the Spike to us.

You can see photographs of it at the site below.
