London police carries demo exercise to prepare for disturbances in London 2012 Olympic torch rally
The police of London carried out a fake exercise in order to demonstrate their capabilities at dealing with any problem that might take place during the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games torch rally.
The total number of police personnel that will be escorting the Olympic flame all across the United Kingdom will be 28 in all. These police officers will not be armed, however, every measure will be taken to ensure that the sanctity of the torch rally is
preserved and no group or individual steals the attention away from the Olympics torch as it travels all over the country.
Bob Broadhurst, who is the officer in charge of the Olympic Games police in the capital of England, expressed himself on the matter by making the following comments, “I think the biggest threat will be attention seekers, somebody trying to run alongside
and grab a bit of the glory. I'm sure we'll get the odd protest every now and then up and down the country. I personally don't think they'll be serious trouble ... But we of course need to plan for the worst.”
It will not be until May 18 that the Olympic flame will be arriving in the United Kingdom, a country who will be playing host to the Olympic Games for the third time and becoming the first in the world to have done so. The total distance that the Olympics
torch will travel will cover 8,000 miles as it moves across the United Kingdom as well as Ireland. The number of torch bearers that will participate in the activity will also be 8000.
The Olympic torch rallies have previously been scarred by protests in other host cities which took place before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after which the International Olympic Committee ruled that the torch rallies should take place in the host country
only.
There is speculation that the London 2012 Olympic Games torch rally may also see groups trying to seek attention by disturbing its 70-day course that is set to end at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games which begin from July 27 at the Olympic Stadium
in London.
