  1. £5.30 is a zone 1-2 off-peak TC.  PAYG will cap at 50p less than than, so it will be only £4.80

    You can put any amount on an Oyster from 10p to £90


  2. On a weekday, Travelcards are much cheaper after 09:30hrs but if you intend to make some public transport trips before that time an Oyster Card would also be worth having. On Saturdays and Sundays there is no additional cost involved in using a bus tube tram or train before 09:30hrs. Remember that a Travelcard is valid until 04:30hrs in the morning following the date printed on the card.

  3. It depends how much you travel and which types of transport you use.  If you live in South London and are likely to use the rail services (most not currently on Oyster) then the travelcard is better value.  Obviously you can't just put 5.30 on an oyster, you've got to put about 10 pounds on it so you'd need to use it more than one day anyway.  The oyster is easier because you don't need to buy a new one every day.
