I've lived in London practically all my childhood years and absolutely love the place with all my heart. But one thing that's been bothering me for ages was how people with the "posh accent" was looked at.

I was raised by my grandfather who spoke with a RP, or "the Queen's English" and naturally I've developed into it myself.

It didn't seem to bother anybody when I was a child, but now whenever I go back, I always receive that funny look and teasings from the people around me. And just the other day this person I really hate was talking about how RP-speaking people don't belong anywhere?

For some reason, this only happens to me in London.

Whenever I visit friends in Birmingham or Oxford, or meet new people, this never happens to me.

Only in London.

So my question is,.

why is "the Queen's English" received so horribly, for me, especially in London?

  1. I think it's because the London accent has changed so dramatically in the last decade, it's now really different from RP and the only people who speak it now seem to be people with money or well educated people - which they resent!  Although I know that's not true, it's just a stereotype.
