I visit London lots, but have never reallly ventured over to Brick Lane, Whitechapel area etc. Is it worth seeing?

I find that Camden, Portobello and Covent Garden are great for a young, chic, indie scene, how about Brick Lane? Any tips on where to go, what to see, good exhibitions etc..?

Is the area fairly safe, as I would be a young girl on my own..?

Also, Is the best tube to reach it Aldgate East? or is it worth checking out buses from Liverpool St.?

Any help would be appreciated so much!

  1. in the early hours of the morning its the best place for bagels and coffee...ask any cabbie...and during the day its a mecca for fashion bargins with an asian feel....the surrounding areas are not great unless you walk down to the thames and st Katherine docks..

  2. If you're curious it's worth popping over to Brick Lane for a wander, there are a few cool shops and it's pretty central, but generally it's not that exciting. Unless you like being harrassed into buying a curry, that is.

  3. Brick Lane is a large Bangladesh community. A market and shops aint nothing special its use to be a Cockney community times change

  4. This page tells you what you will find in Brick Lane.

  5. you can go with me but your paying :D lol

  6. there is nothing exiting in Brick lane to see.. its ugly place

  7. I go to Brick Lane heaps... its worth seeing, lots of curry shops... but even better are the Spitalfields markets which are on right next to it on the weekends.  There's lots of bars and other restaurants, a great music shop and loads going on, I'd really recommend it.

  8. Brick Lane is a cool place with loads going on.  Wouldn't go on my own at night tho.  Also check out nearby Spittalfields market and Shoreditch.

  9. Well, I live in London and don't think much of Brick Lane... I know some people think it's a great place but it's really not that amazing.. there isn't really much to see except a few vintage shops and cafes... the area that brick lane is in it not a really nice area either.. i won't really recommend going all the way there but if you're curious and like vintage shops then you could pay it a visit.

  10. I haven't been there in nearly 30 years, so I suppose

    a lot could have changed.

Is the Sunday market in Petticoat Lane still on ?

There was a busy market most days, but especially

on Sunday.  Back in those days, most everything else

    was closed on Sundays.

That is within walking distance of Liverpool St. station.

The area is of some interest historically.

Many, many years ago it was a Jewish community,

but they have departed for points north and east,

leaving it to the newest wave of immigrants,

mostly from Asia.  A few remnants of the Jewish

    community remain.

It's probably not a big attraction, but if you've

nothing better to do on a Sunday morning,

it might be worth popping over and having a look

    around.

  11. These people must be mad! Brick Lane is brilliant! If you like Indian/Bangladeshi cuisine you will be in for a treat. The Big Chill Bar and the pubs with the bbqs outside are rocking on a Friday evening. There's a cool Vespa showroom, plenty of clubs, vintage clothes shops, Spitalfields Market (esp on a Sunday), the Ten Bells pub with some original tiling (and where Jack the ripper identified some of his victims!) Liverpool Street nearby, art galleries and check out the Banksy skull in the pink car at the Liverpool Street end! Take a friend with you and you'll both love it!
