Loney backing Rotherham
New Rotherham Titans player Alex Loney has broken rank and said that his new side stand a very good chance of getting into the Premiership by the end of the season.
The Championship is one of the most competitive leagues in the United Kingdom and is full of clubs who stand a very good chance of winning the fruits that Premiership promotion leads to.
Loney arrives at the club as a hooker and a back row player. He has said that he's already experienced a great deal of determination and drive from the team, which will simply be too much for others to handle when the season starts.
Loney as a player and Rotherham as a club have many positive qualities, which should mean they do very well. However, it's important to remember that there will be other players at other clubs equally determined to make sure their club succeeds.
Player and club
Rotherham have a very big and well organised team. This makes them very difficult to attack against and very difficult to break down because there will always be players in the way ready to spoil the party.
Loney only adds to this and he has the ability to add real power in the pack or in scrums as the side looks to push forward. This can mean that an opposition side is on the back foot when they were only inches away from Rotherham's line.
They seem to have the right balance in the side and Loney is going to add experience where it is needed. He had numerous runs in the Leicester team but was never able to nail down a place consistently.
He said: "We all know what was achieved by the Rotherham team that Andre (Bester) put together last time he was here and that's inspiration for all of us but we want to establish our own credentials and prove that this group of players know how to play rugby."
One Step at a Time
It's important that Rotherham take one step at a time and do not forget about the power that other sides possess. There are some very good teams in the Championship and both Worcester and Bristol will want promotion possibly more than the Titans.
If the side do not pay full attention to all of their opponents during the course of the summer then they could find themselves on the end of some surprising defeats.
Loney added: "It was a similar story at Nottingham in that a group of players were kept together for a period of time and achieved success but things change and people move on. Whenever I've played against Rotherham, especially at Clifton Lane, I've been given a tough game and I want that to continue now I'm a Rotherham man."
Betting advice
Any one of three or four sides could get promotion to the Premiership from the Championship and Rotherham are one of them. The best option is to wait until the season has started and take a look at results over two or three games. If Rotherham start well then don't be afraid to back them because they have a side that can do very well.
Loney is a big player who obviously likes to speak out when and where it is appropriate. Don't be fooled by this because he is a defensive player and you should disregard seeing his name in the media as a sign that he could do well. He will not score the most points in a Rotherham jersey so find a player who is more likely to do this at the club.
