Long Beach State men’s volleyball team loses to University of California, Irvine on Wednesday by 3-1
Long Beach State men’s volleyball team was up against University of California, Irvine on Wednesday.
If LBSU had planned to put an end to their home court losing streak, they failed to turn that plan into reality as the Anteaters handed out a defeat to the host team by sealing the deal at 3-1. With the recent loss, it is now three matches that LBSU has
lost in their home court.
The defeat that LBSU has just swallowed was suffered at the following final set scores:  25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 27-25.
Despite the fact that the 49ers make up a competitive and talented team, they made some significant mistakes that cost them the match against the number four ranking Anteaters. If the 49ers want to improve as a team and see themselves as one of the top ranking
teams of the nation, they need to work on their mistakes.
Above all else, the 49ers seemed to be lacking in energy. There was not the required amount of vigour in their movements which made the play of the 49ers sluggish. Other than that, they failed to handle pressure situations effectively that arose at the end
of almost every set as the scores were close and the set in its final stages.
The start of the first set of the match saw the Anteaters take control relatively easily. They were almost helped to gain dominance by the inefficient performance that the 49ers were putting up. Consequently, what followed was the Anteater side staying with
the lead with the 49ers trailing far behind. The Anteaters had a considerable advantage at 20-11 which they stretched on to make a win for themselves at 25-19.
The second set of the match saw the 49ers step up their game and this time around, they put up quite a challenge to the Anteaters. The visiting team was made to fight for every point that they put on the scoreboard whereas the impressive attack of the 49ers
made it very difficult for the Anteaters to block any point. As a result, the 49ers were able to take the second set of the game at 25-20.
Unfortunately, for the 49ers, the second set would be the only one that would give them any glory in the entire match. The Anteaters were able to bag the third set of the game at 25-22 in an impressive display of both skill and speed.
With a fourth set win essential for the 49ers if they wanted to have a winning chance, LBSU put up a good fight. However, the effort came in too late and the Anteaters were able to take the fourth and final set at 27-25.
“After the first 15 points, I didn’t recognize our team,” said head coach Andy Read of the 49ers. “You can’t come out that soft in this league and win.”
