Long Island Sound-pollution?

I live less than a mile from the Long Island Sound. The waters are murky greenish gray and are littered. People swim in these waters. Creatures live and breed. I know that will not last. What can we do?

not a lot.

the water doesn't get flushed very well.

particularly down near NY.

there isn't a current, and the tide coming in and out just moves it back and forth.

the only help is to not get stuff dumped in it in the first place.

and these days, there are quite a lot of people who just don't care.
