I have a friend from Ontario, Canada, coming to visit me in the US. She doesn't have a passport, but I understand that she will be able to cross the border as long as she has a birth certificate and a valid, government-issued photo ID. She has the photo ID, but I'm wondering whether she'll need a short-form or a long-form birth certificate, or if it doesn't matter either way.

  1. Either one will be fine.  It doesn't matter.

  2. The answers are correct, as long as the birth certificate is an official one, i.e. one issued by the Province or a designated agency either type will be sufficient.  The purpose of the birth certificate is really to establish citizenship by birth so as long as it is official, either type will work.

  3. Either one works.  We took all our kids down to the States with the short birth certificate.
