Long-tail boats in Phi Phi Don?

Hi, I'll be visiting Phi Phi Don in 2 weeks for holiday. I've read online that to get around in that island, they use mostly Long-tail boats. Has anyone here sat in one? How does it work - do you pay for a round trip in the boat, does the driver stop you at different points and then wait for you to get back?

Having just returned from Krabi, there it can be used like a taxi, where you pay to get to a location then get another one (i guess it is more like a bus since there are usually more passengers) but you can rent them for a longer period for more personal service. Have fun!!!
