Long term diazepam (Valium) use side effects?

Is there any side effects of long term diazepam (valium) use in children? Does it permanently affect intelligence, memory or motor functions? Is there any study conducted to support this?

Thank you for all those answering this question.

P.S. I know that diazepam is a sedative used for seizures, alcohol withdrawal and muscle spasms. I also know the common side but is there any permanent damage associated with long term usage in children?

  1. I would be incredibly concerned with giving a child such a powerful, potentially addictive medicine for long-term use. There is a high risk of addiction with benzos, not to mention most studies on drugs DO NOT study the effects in children. With such a powerful drug and such a young, changing mind, I would be VERY hesitant before administering any sort of drug like this.

  2. Benzodiazepines may affect learning and memory.

You should under no circumstances give a child any benzodiazepines without a doctor's order! Valium is a strong drug with serious side-effects and a great addiction potential.
