Long time exposure with nikon d40

how do you set the camera to have a long exposure time? i want to shoot at night. thanks

  1. Have it on a tripod and set it to shutter priority then use the command dial to change to the shutter speed you want ( pg 41 of the manual ) . You can also use the program mode with the pictogram of the person with the star overhead that is a nighttime mode A third option is to put it in manual mode and set the shutter speed. The higher the iso the less light it will take but the more noise there will be

  2. Put your camera on the manual mode. Then adjust your shutter speed to B or bulb. Now you control how long the shutter stays open. It is best to do this with a remote or cable release to avoid shaking the camera.

    When it comes to the shot you will have to experiment with the shutter speed. Set your ISO at 100. Choose your aperture and experiment with the shutter. Depending on how dark it is start at about 30 seconds and go up or down as you need to.

    It obviously goes without saying that you need a tripod for this. You can't do this without one.
