Question:

Long winded Golf Grip question, Love the Sport?

OK I just took up golf again after 10 years, I just felt like I was starting to do better, a few pars and a lot of bogey's or double bogey's then I golf with this guy who golfs 2 under par, and he tells me my grip is so wrong and that is where my inconsistency comes from, tells me I need to learn the right way or I will never do it right.

So I try it for 4 holes, did terrible I am talking 8 and 9 per hole, I start to feel like I don't even want to play if I am going to make this work, finally I reverted back to my baseball type grip and start to hit the ball and enjoy the game again.

I keep my hands close together but I do not over lap, should I try to make my grip more accurate or adapt so I can get better, any links would be great, pictures what ever, keep in mind I love the sport and would like to get much much better!

Thanks!

  1. two golers . total legends . ben hogan , jimmy demart . both were qouted as saying , if i was young enough , i would not use the vardon grip , if i was starting again i would use the baseball grip . stay with the baseball grip . ladies will lose thier slice , increse thier accuracy , and when struck well will have a slight hook . the overlap, interlock are for large hands . if hogan and demaret confirm baseball grip . that is all the advice you need . this is not a bigoted remark so please do not be offended . women have so much more flexabilty in thier wrists . the baseball grip will reduce the harmful natural flexability . the person who played with your grip was a bit out of line . you should only give advice if asked , and then only at the end of the round . never ever during round of play . good luck . the person did have good intentions . just that the timing was bad . all the best . it is just a game to be enjoyed . not harmed through ill timed advice. if you are worried aboyt your grip . find old club . have golf shop install training grip . you can grip re grip well watching t v . this will be easier than changing on the range . all the best .

  2. I had the same probs.......then I took the advice of a mate and had a lesson with the PGA Pro at my local GC.

Straight as a dye and a good 20-30yds distance. The best 15 quid I've spent in a while.....well.....apart from that nice Bourgogne I had at the weekend!!!

    Say no more......

  3. as for any new technique in golf it takes at least three to four rounds to get used to a new idea along with time on the range.  a baseball grip is technically a grip and works for many people, however majority of professionalls use some type of overlapping grip.  with that said there is a guy on the senior tour that plays right handedwith his left hand on the bottom and plays under par.   i would talk to a professional and see what they say since they went to school to tell people how to golf.  also you have to look at where you want your golf game to go.  do you want to go out and have a good time or go out and worry about every shot and critique everything about your game?

  4. just do what feels right to you, but if you really want to get better than you need to go to the range alot and try the new grip.

  5. Taking advice from friends, boyfriends, and husbands is, at best, not done (unless the male in question is a PGA Professional).

If a baseball grip is comfortable and you're having fun with the game...go for it.  Is it the best?  Maybe not.

If you want help, take lessons from a PGA Professional who actually knows what they're talking about.

I dated a woman who played; unless she aimed somewhere in the next county or had her yardage off by 50 yards (thinking she had 150 to the hole when it was 100), I did not, under any circumstance, offer any advice.

At the end of the day, golf is a sport, and thus should be fun.  If you keep up with the group in front of you, and practice good etiquette, use your baseball grip to your heart's content.

  6. Baseball, Interlock, Overlap.........You are probably not going to try to make the LPGA......so go with what works for you.....that said.....If you actually wish to improve in time it would be best to take a few lessons from a Teaching pro to get the necessary basics out of the way.  Advice from anybody who is not involved in teaching is not the way to actually learn and improve.....everybody has their own unique quirks that they have picked up over the years.....besides.....Just have fun!

  7. Here are some step by step pictorials from Golf.com. They should be able to give you a good idea of what a sound golf grip looks like. The last link explains the way your hands should be on the club. I will say this to you, next time you golf with that person, let them give you advice after the round not during it. Cause making a comment like "your grip is bad" during a round will ruin your mental approach and your thoughts will be on the grip and not playing the game.

  8. There are three popular grips in golf. One is the OVERLAP where the pinky of the left hand overlaps the forefinger of the right hand. We are presuming that you are a right handed golfer. The second is the INTERLOCK  where the forefinger of the right hand interlocks with the pinky of the left hand, which is a very secure grip but may let the right hand dominate the swing. The third is your BASEBALL grip which lays all 10 fingers on the grip. There is nothing wrong with this grip. What you must be aware of  is how the fingers are placed on the club. You want the thumbs pointing down the center of the shaft for a neutral grip. If the thumbs are in the back of center you have a " hook" grip and  if they are more toward the face of the club you are in a slice position. Just be aware at address that you always check your grip and your position to the ball and you should be consistent. The INTERLOCK would be my preference if you are used to the BASEBALL grip because that makes you work the hands in unison.Regardless of the grip , this is the object , to work the hands together, one assisting the other.

  9. First thing - don't pay attention to googie's answer because he doesn't even know which hand goes on top.  There are no golfers on the PGA or LPGA tours using your baseball grip, but some people are successful with it.  If you really want to improve and get proficient at the game eventually that grip is going to hold you back, so you might as well change it now and learn a proper grip.  But don't expect instant success with it, you will suffer for awhile before improving.
