  1. If Major Bonanza is the father or grandfather, than that is really good.  He was a huge producer and earner himself.  If he is not the father or grandfather, look at the horses closest to the horse you are looking at; father, mother, maternal granddam and maternal grandsire, paternal granddam and paternal gradsire.  If those horses have earned or produced than it would be good indicator of your horses abilities.

And if you are not wanting to compete nationally or breedwise, than I would say that is a pretty cool thing to have Major Bonanza bloodlines regardless.  Goodluck, it is a great line to have.

  2. I owned a Major Bonanza gelding back in '85 and he was the best horse I ever owned.  He was a 2 year old green broke puppy dog.  He never bucked me off and was very level headed.  I showed him in 4-H, AQHA (and beat Bob Avila with him), Open Shows and Rodeos (all disciplines from Halter to Gaming).  If you'd like to see what he looked like, I have a pic of my current mare Carly on my Flikr page that I bought because she is a spitting image of him; even though there is no relation between them.  I have to agree though with the others about how far back in the horse you are looking at to see where the Major Bonanza is listed.  Grand Sire would be the farthest back I would go.  What other, if any, big names are in the pedigree?  FYI - Pat Parelli has a Bonanza stud at service on his website.  I ended up selling him after college when I got married.  Best way to describe his personality (horsenality) is Ferdinan the Bull.  You know the cartoon bull that would lay up under the tree and smell the flowers all day long instead of socializing with the "girls".

  3. Here's some information I found out about him.  Looks like he's sired some great all-around horses that have done everything from Halter to Cutting, to a horse that was a 3x World Champ in western riding!
