I am single mom and I bought a home 3 yrs ago and didn't realise how unenergy efficient it was. Windows are old wood windows from orginal build in 1953 and doors have no seals around them. Have had several repairs I had to make with plumbing and the electrical still needs alot of work. I could really use some help finding a grant or something but do not have the money to buy the online products to look for the grant. If anyone knows names of grants or who I can talk to,to try to get help I would greatly appreciate it.

  1. Call your power company. They usually have all the information and will direct you to where you can get help. They have an interest in people using less power and being more energy efficient.

But what a great country we live in where somebody can say they bought a house but are "low income".

Much of the world would consider that being rich.

Despite there may be help for you out there the world doesn't owe it to you.

How about taking a second job?

  2. I don't know where you live at but in Missouri you can go to Ozark Action. They have an energy assistance program and part of it includes getting  your house more energy efficient. They will blow insulation into the walls, put  in new window, wrap your hot water heater,  ect.

  3. In central PA we have Community Action that provides exactly the services you need. I know it's available to anyone based on the number of residents to income ratio.I recommend this program to many of my customers and they start by calling the welfare department. It's stigmatic to some to call it welfare , but if you need it you need it. That's what it is there for. Good luck !

  4. I know that you're on a low income, but do this a little bit at a time for starters. go to walmart and buy insulating tape. it's just a couple bucks for something like 10 feet or something? just put this around the doors and on the bottom part of the window. then buy a door sweep. you just cut it to fit the size of your door, and s***w it on the bottom. that helps keep a draft out (or do what my mom did and put a towel there). also look for little styrofoam pieces that you put behind the face plates of your outlets. they are really cheap (under a buck) and you just unscrew the plate, slide the styrofoam on the back, and s***w it back on.

as for the grant part, talk to your local human services department where you get medicaid and food stamps. they might be able to steer you into the right direction. I honestly have no idea.

  5. Go to the housing page of www.helpforlowincome.com you will find a variety of agencies that help with this sort of issue like the Home Weatherization Program, HUD Homeowner programs, etc. there's a link to everything listed on the site.
