I've discovered that I am Jewish. Accordingly, I want to change my surname.

Does anyone know where to look for suggestions? Are there any lists online?

Thanks.

  1. Lots of people who are Jewish don't have Jewish-sounding last names. You don't need to change your name for people to know you're Jewish. I don't have a "Jewish" last name. Loads of others don't either.

If you're changing you're name because you want to identify more with your Jewish-ness, I'd suggest going to a yeshiva for baal-teshuvas like Aish or Ohr Sameach in Jerusalem. You could look up other ones to see which school is best for you.

  2. Any name can be Jewish.  In the U. S. a lot of names are identified as Jewish because a large portion of immigrants to this country with those names were Jewish while back in their home countries the same name was used by Jews and Christians alike.

Orthodox and Conservative Judaism defines a Jew by the mother not the father.

They state they get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father.  If they don't have a Jewish father, they belong to the tribe of the nearest male relative on their mother's side of the family irregardless of religious beliefs.   Whereas if they don't have a Jewish mother, the only way they can be Jewish is to convert to Judaism.  From what I have found from my mitochondrial DNA (direct female line) I might be considered Jewish by Orthodox and Conservative Judaism.  However, I am not of the Jewish faith.

    Reform Jews view it differently.

  3. lipschitz

  4. Well i am jewish also and my last name is goldberg. you can add an "er" to the end of it. Many people have last names with "blank"stein or "blank"sky or "blank"berg. Just suggestions.

  5. There are a lot of Jewish surnames, an that's because there are a lor of Jewish people in this wide world!!!!!

If I were you, I'd change also my forenames to Jewish ones.

A common surname I´d choose is Pertz, or Schuartz

I am Mexican and I know that during the Holocaust many Jews that were living in Europe and came to Mexico, they changed their Jewish surnames to Mexican ones!!!

So, consider well about changing your surnames, though it may seem easy, you'll have to get new documents of everything (passport, school certificates, university diplomas, driver's licence, birth certificate...)

    Thanks for your valuable time.
