Question:

Looking for Privacy Tree for Zone 9 (potted)?

I want to find a tree that will off privacy from my neighbors. The best location for it to be planted would be in full sun. I am also looking for something with a small root base that can be potted for a while (couple years), before being planted into the ground.

Would appreciate any suggestions. I am in Southern California - zone 9

  1. Try Crepe Myrtle....they are not really trees....but we have some that are about  20' high and every summer they have beautiful flowers.....they are gorgeous....some in pale pink, bright pink, lavender,  beautiful red (people stop and ask to take pictures of our red ones.  They are very bushy and bloom from about 1ft from the ground all the way up.

  2. Privacy plantings should be evergreen trees or shrubs.  Otherwise you lose the privacy when the leaves fall off in winter.  I live in zone 9 in Florida, here we would use cedar (Juniper) or wax myrtle for privacy, either of which could be held in pots.  Shrubs used for privacy hedges are also a possibility.  Ceanothus, listed in the second link below, sounds like a good choice in this category.  Good luck.

  3. I'm not sure about the zone - but Birch Trees are nice - they don't get huge but they do make a nice privacy buffer. May also want to try Cat Tails/Plumes. If all else fails, get you a Huge cactus!! lol!!
