Help, I need to pull a whole unit on maps for first grade sped class. I am lost need Special Education Lesson plans because to get un-lost.

Special education students in first grade could have very little understanding of the symbolism on maps. I like the Weekly Reader Map Skills for Today series. You could take the Kindergarten and/or First Grade books, blow up the symbols make matching games from little toys and paper symbols.

Many kids also think that North is up. These kids may not know anything about directions. So you could take them on a walking tour of the school with a paper compass rose and work on directions. Left and Right could be challenging enough. You could also make milk carton and shoe box maps of the school neighborhood and have them draw their own neighborhood where they live. Mailbox materials has some nice activities for social studies--I would take a look at Kindergarten level materials since your kids are most likely remedial in their skills. Think big, fun, and simple--they will catch onto the concepts more readily.
