There's a travel lodge just nearby, they are always cheap and cheerful.

try travelodge they have rooms in Manchester in Dec starting from £29 for the night. my wife uses them a lot, clean tidy and you can order breakfast usually for £7.50

There are two just outside piccadilly train station, which is a 10 min walk from the apollo,one is called Monroes and the other Hotel International,both have b&b for under £20 a night.
