Looking for a book about voluntary simplicity?

I once read an incredible book about voluntary simplicity, but my library got rid of the book and I can't figure out who the author is. He made a lot of comparisons between the lifestyle of a private investigator in 1960's novels and voluntary simplicity lifestyle. He inspired me to start taking the bus and start renting an apartment to live more stress-free and named Houston as an ideal place for his lifestyle. If anyone knows the author and title of this book I will be very grateful. Thank you.
