I was offered a used Cigna Kokomo 18-speed hybrid bike...whatever that means anyway, I don't have a clue how to shop for bicycles, could I get some redirection, which bike should I get and when I get one what qualities should I be looking for? I'm only looking to ride around the park.

  1. Read Bicycling magazine (or www.bicycling.com). For HYBRID bikes or road bikes ---TREK is a sweet brand. ( ask for the 2008 color catalog from your Trek BIKE DEALER)---WSD   ( women specific design) bikes are your best bet.

  2. I would look for a cruiser or (as you mentioned), a hybrid bike.

I wouldn't look for anything fancy. Just something that's comfortable for you to ride because you don't need anything special to ride around a park.

As for the price range, I wouldn't buy something over $250... But that's me, considering im not a rich man

  3. For a ride around the park, a hybrid (the frame is more like a mountain bike with an upright seating position and the tires are more narrow like a road bike so it's easier to pedal than a mtn bike) is a good idea.  It can handle bumps easily and will likely feel more natural at first than leaning far forward over a road bike's handlebars.

If you are really just going for comfort or tooling around the park, a "roadie" might be your choice.  It offers possible the most plush ride of any type of bike.  The trade off?  It has big tires that will take you some extra energy if you want to go fast or far.  They come with gears or without.  If you have any hills around, get the one with gears.

As far as the Cigna Kokomo you were offered - try it out.  See how it feels.  If it really feels good, go with it.  You should definitely be able to find something you like for under  $200-300 if you are willing to go used rather than new.
