  1. With Spring Training right around the corner, lets go ahead and start looking at this year's upcoming baseball season and who might take the World Series.

Valentine’s Day could not fall on a better day than Monday when the majority of Major League Baseball teams start Spring Training. Of course there are greater loves, but baseball ranks very high on my personal list. So, I look forward to providing you with detailed analysis of several teams and their chances for a Pennant and World Championship. Once the season begins I will provide my 5* Lock plays for MLB, which will be in the same format as my 5* Locks for College Basketball, College Football, the NBA, NFL, and the NHL.

The Phillies have the best starting rotation in baseball period, but not much has been mentioned about their offense and the impact that losing Jason Werth to free agency will have on the offense in 2011.

Raul Ibanez will be an Excellent Fantasy Selection

Raul IbanezLeft Fielder, Raul Ibanez, is 39 years old and struggled mightily early in the 2010 season. He underwent substantial abdominal surgery in the the off season leading into the 2010 Spring Training and was far behind his normal preparation and it showed. He hit just .130 getting seven hits in 54 plate appearances in Grapefruit League action.

This poor batting carried over into the first part of the season as well batting just .221 with 15 hits in 68 plate appearances and getting nine RBI. His hitting gradually improved as he had more plate appearances under his belt and batted .243 through the All-Star break.  His Post All-Star numbers were excellent batting .309 with nine home runs and 44 RBI. Once is he was near 100% healthy his hitting abilities reflected to his true form.

For those playing fantasy baseball he is certainly a player you will be able to pickup cheaply. He did not have big time numbers and played in a lineup dominated by all-star highlight reel players in Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and starting pitchers Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels.

Over the last 20 seasons, there have been 83 players age 39 or older that logged more than 400 at bats and 25 of these players hit 20 or more home runs and posted an OPS of .800 or higher. One of these 25 is a former teammate and mentor of Ibanez named Edgar Martinez. Ibanez has often talked about his experiences with Seattle and seeing how Martinez got things done and still produced big numbers late in his career. He could not have a better model to follow and this year Ibanez comes into spring training 100% healthy.

    NL and World Series Odds

I have never bet on a favorite to win either Pennant or to win the World Series this early in the calendar year. Even though we have not even seen a ‘practice’ game the Phillies are by far the best team in MLB. I think only Boston at this point can matchup well against them.  The Yankees rotation is basically a chant waiting to happen in the Bronx with “ Sabathia and Hughes and then we lose”. The Mets are a mess and disorganized. Giants and Rangers are certainly contenders, but the Phillies have four aces in their rotation all of which have the potential to contend for the Cy Young award.

The MLB odds makers essentially have made the World Series a three horse race between the Phillies (3-1 odds), Boston (13-4 odds, and New York (6-1 odds). The New York Yankees are a complete joke at 6-1 and I would rather take a stab with the Twins at 20-1 odds.
The Phillies at 3-1 odds to win the World series and 3-2 to win the NL Pennant are my picks. I also like dark horses in the Twins at 20-1 and 10-1 for the Pennant and  the Reds at 20-1 and 10-1 for the Pennant. Health is always the biggest factor for a MLB team playing the grueling 162 game schedule. The Phillies were injury riddled last season and they lost to the World Champion Giants in the NLCS so it stands to reason they will be even better this season.
