Looking for a good beach vacation in northern Mexico?

I'm going to Mexico end of January, looking for a romantic beachy village or city in northern mexico (coming from Cal). Preferably affordable and not "resorty".

I assume you will be driving so it is a question of how far south you are willing to drive and if you are looking for a place to swim or just a place with a water view and maybe a beach to walk on.I haven't included any of the places near the border that are well known beach/party towns

My favorite area in northern baja is from Puertecitos south to Bahia Gonzaga including the Enchanted Islands(Islas Encantadas) but that might be further south than you care to travel.There are some nice little places scatterd down the pacific side as well such as Guerrero ***** which is a typical quiet small town except when the whales are there.

You probably need a more detailed baja map than the one I have  provided to see some of the smaller places closer to the border.
