Looking for a good budget Nikon D40 SLR lens?

I'm looking for a good budget lens for the Nikkon D40. I have the standard lens kit that came with the camera but I'm finding that it doesn't zoom as far as I'd like.

I want a lens that is responsive with a decent zoom range as I'm mostly going to be taking photographs at an indoor video game events that contains a lot of flashing lights and dark areas. I find that the lens that came with the D40 doesn't really work well in indoor environments, it's good for day to day outdoor shots but is rather limited in other areas.

Preferably under £200.

  1. You Should Get:

    What Fotoace Says...

The 55-200mm lens it great, however with some of the left over money, you should get this lens:

    http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-...

it's a manual-focus lens ( on the D40, since it can only autofocus AF-S lenses, but it will autofocus on the d80, and d300 and so forth ) which has a low aperture of f/1.8, which would be good for shooting indoor, because it's a low-light lens. also consider the 70-300mm Nikkor Lens.

  2. The AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens is a good one and should cover about 70% of your shots ... the one that may fit into your budget is the 55-200 mm VR.  Between those two you should have it covered

  3. Sigma 70-300 macro. £100 approx.

I got one for my Pentax K200D, and works a treat.
