  1. There were two series that sound similar to what you describe that I read as a child in the early 60s:

    The Zip Zip series ("Zip Zip Goes to Venus, Zip Zip Goes to Mars) by Schealer
    The Mushroom Planet series ("Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet") by Cameron
