Looking for a low-maintenance plant/flower for a dorm room?

I'm moving into my dorm and decided to put a potted plant or flower in my dorm.

I love orchids and was wondering if caring for them was going to be difficult.

also, if not orchids, what low-maintenance flower could survive in a dorm room? my dorm gets LOTS of sunlight. its on the beach. : )

i'm not a very knowledgeable person when it comes to gardening or botany, so your answers would really be appreciated!

(and, no, I'm not settling for fake flowers....)

Peace and love from the skies above,

Lucy

  1. Well, I like to tell people (girls especially) that if you want a low maintenance plant, but you want one that isn't just a boring green leaf in a pot, then get a "Polka Dot Plant". They are very easy to care for, look very pretty with it's pink polka dot leaves, and they don't require too much light so they are good indoors. You can usually find them at good garden centers, I have always found them at the home depot garden center, but always call first to save yourself a lot of driving around. Google it to see what they look like.

I wish for Whirled Peas!  ;p

  2. Orchid are generally *very* hard to take care of!  Very finicky plant that has to have just the right amount of sunlight, water, etc.   Same goes with bonsai.  So don't go for a bonsai either.

Anyway, for a dorm room, I suggest any green plant with lots of leaves.  If you want something a little more unique, has more color than just plain green and enjoys the sun, a cactus!  They are so low maintenance and last...forever!

Overall though, green plants are usually the way to grow.  Low maintenance, loves sun but will also love your indoor shade, and so on.  Anyway, I've included a website link for you if you want more info and for particular kinds of plants.

P.S. Plants are great addition to a dorm room.  Cheers up the place and give you fresh oxygen!  Yay for you! :)

  3. If you have your heart set on an Orchid, try a Phalenopsis or a Paphiopedilum.  You can actually get them at Home Depot.  If you give them bright indirect light & water a few times a week (don't let them sit in water) they will flower.  Probably only one flowering per year, but the flowers last quite a long time.

Otherwise, easy care foliage plants like Aglonema, Philodendron and Sanseveria are a good bet.

I think you sound like someone who would enjoy a horticulture course if your college offers one.

  4. Weed......Preferably northern lights or any good bud you can sell for huge profits on campus.

I'm serious! My parents died when I was 16 and I didn't have the money to pay for my little sister to go for 4 years PLUS medschool etc.  Even with us both working 3 jobs we just couldnt pay her way and couldnt get a loan so I grew pot and paid for her to go through medschool without missing out on the experience

You'll rethink that after being away from the dorm for a while.
