Try 118.com (though I couldn't on a quick search), or a programme called peoplefinder.

If you look up whitepages (an American site), you'd be amazed at what you can find out about people if you're willing to pay.

I'm pretty sure similar sites exist over here.

Another possibility - try a letter to the local Chatham newspaper "Readers' Letters Column" asking if anyone knows what became of your old friend.

Our local paper often carries similar enquiries and they appear to be quite successful.
