looking for a schwin or mongoose. I hear these are pretty good. what should I look for. I consider myself a beginner and just looking for casual riding, but comfortable and easy to haul/take with in a van.

  1. If you have the money, get a Santa Cruz, Rocky Mountain, or Iron Horse...Or even a Giant, Trek Or Specialized...

Those are nice ones...and get one with disc brakes too

  2. Steer away from the mongoose at all costs.   They surely wont pass your "light' criteria.   You should be able to find a Schwinn.   Visit a bike shop and check your brand preferences at the door;  finding one to fit your budget and riding style is much more important.

  3. The best way to choose a bike is to ride several until you find one that just fits.  It's a great feeling when you ride a bike that is the right size.

The things to look out for are:

    1) aluminium frame - the lightest material next to carbon fibre but quite strong too.  It's actually an aluminum alloy, so finding out what it's alloyed with will determine how light, strong and durable it will be.  Also, it doesn't rust.

    2) suspension - useful for long, bumpy rides but cheap suspension will sap your strength on flat roads.  Spend a bit more on it and make sure it's adjustable, or consider doing without it altogether.

    3) brand - Schwin and Mongoose are both fine brands - Mongoose comes from a BMX background and there's a bit of a markup for "coolness".  Giant are also good and probably the best name in mountain bikes is Gary Fisher.

    4) portability - all bikes will go in the back of even the smallest van or estate car, normally without taking wheels off.   Most wheels and seat stems are quick-release now. However, beware of removing the rear wheel for transportation - it's very easy to damage the back gears if they are unprotected by the back wheel.  Remove the front wheel if you have to and lower the seat before removing the rear wheel.

  4. What size frame are you looking for?  I have a 17" 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper Pro - full XTR components, new saddle, new bottom bracket, cogs, chain and 2 of the front 3 chain rings that I'm looking to sell.  $400.  It's perfect for beginner/casual riding.
