I am looking for a new digital camera; I currently use an old Sekor/Mamiya 500 DTL and a Fujifilm 6.3 Mega Pixels. I take photography a lot mostly portraits, occasionally glamour, and landscape. I was looking at the Canons or the Nikons, but I don't know. I want a camera that can take pictures well, but not a camera that is going to kill me to carry around. A little advice please?

  1. Take a look at the Canon PowerShot A590 IS, and the Canon PowerShot A720IS. Both are considered the best in the compact camera class. They have manual options, built-in flash, optical viewfinder, video recording capability, at least 4x zoom, large 2.5" LCD, and are extremely lightweight at less than 225 grams. Both use 2 standard AA batteries. Also, you can find that both retail at under $200.

  2. The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the IS] 7.1  with an added  2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for "Vivid" colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos.  It currently sells for $160 at Sears:

    Good luck!

  3. Canon G-9 or Canon 650.

These 2 are are advanced cameras offering lots of manual control, but lack the lens interchangeability of DSLRs.

The G9 is top of it's line, offering TIF and camera raw format as well, for great flexibility in post processing options.

Edit: The Rebel is not a small camera and the Nikon 6.1mp, do you mean the D40 DSLR?  These are very good cameras, but not exactly lightweights. One of your requirements was for a camera that wasn't going to kill you to carry around. You'll have to decide if you don't mind carrying a larger camera with you.
