Short drives:

I like Kabul Afghan restaurant--on 833 W. El Camino a couple miles West of Wolfe.  If you've never had Afghan food it's a bit like Indian and a bit like Persian--if you like either you will find something to make you happy.  This would be an appropriate place to take a date.

If you like S. Indian food--or if you've never had it--I would recommend Saravana Bhavan 1305 S Mary Ave.  It's only slightly farther than Kabul from El Camino and Wolfe, in the same general direction (Mary intersects El Camino).  This place can be crowded, and the service may seem a bit rude.  The times I've been there I was told what to order--which was fine, since I'm not familiar with S. Indian food.  I wouldn't recommend it as much for an early dating situation because of the service and the crowd, but the food is awfully good, and a nice change from the usual Indian.
