  1. how about sony viow

    hp pavillion dv 2000

  2. They are all about equally good, as long as you get one of the manufacturer's faster models (they all use the same parts), just get plenty of RAM and a large HD and a large monitor.

In fact load it up with RAM.

  3. Engineering computers often require specialized components. We distinguish between regular computers and Engineering Workstations. If you are paying $15k for software, a 50% faster machine makes economic sense.

You need to first determine the software you will use, then check to see their requirements. For example, some CAE software requires a tested and approved video card. Check the websites of the suppliers to see what is needed for your workstation.

Other than special requirements, you want a reasonably fast machine with lots of capability. We tend to build our own, of selected components for really good speed. We don't go with the $1000 top end processors, but go pretty fast on the components. We also use mirrored drives for all workstations and UPS for all users. Also, fast networking for workstations. The engineering machines are demoted to other users as they age, replacing them with faster new machines.

For general use, outside of the workstations, easiest just to buy fairly inexpensive computer from mainline supplier like Compaq, Toshiba, etc. Load it up with memory and hard drive, make sure video card has adequate resolution. If you plan to have engineering use the workstation for 3 to five years, probably no reason to go real expensive, as in 1 year, cheap computers will be more capable than even a fast machine.

BTW, consider whether a laptop is sufficient. Many engineers use mostly Office type applications, or other low powered apps. The convenience of the laptop might outweigh the higher performance of the desktop.
