We were told she has a learning, cognative, and speach delay. She may be dyslexic, her Dad and Grandpa are. The only resource I've found offers only 30 min. sessions twice a week, I don't think that will be enough to help her catch up by kindergarden. We are willing to pay for private school, but we can't find one. Also if you know of a docter that can diagnose what the problem is that would help. We have only lived here for about a week. She is almost 5 yrs old.

  1. I live in WA. Sometimes you have to go to the main district building and ask them for there help. If they don't have any help for you in your district look at districts outside of yours but close. If they can give you more help, get a evaluation called an I.E.P Its an Individual Education Plan. This will allow your child to go to a school out of district, without you moving. Also try the children's hospital they have alot of help there for children also. This speech problem may go away with time and also to much pressure will also make her upset. Talk to her therapist and make sure that's a good amount of time

  2. Contact your local elementary school or the administration offices.  Public schools have to test children and provide education for preschool children with delays or disabilities.  It's probably called the Headstart program.

  3. are you meaning that headstart will only provide a one hour therapy session per week, because the program is now full time in most areas and has two half day sessions in other areas and usually operates 4-5 days per week, as prescribed by the federal government who funds the program.

just because there is only one hour of therapy per week does not mean that there is no teaching or learning during the other parts of the school day.children at this age need to experience things several times before they actually "learn" them, so that all day long she/he is hearing, seeing, touching, tasting, and doing things to help improve the areas where she/he is having problems.

i worked in headstart for over 8 years and have been a specialist dealing with this age group, and assisting in several families(try several dozen)during their headstart time and beyond. children are marvelous learners and just need a chance to do so. even in a public or private school a child will only get maybe 1-2 hours of individual or very small group therapy sessions, that is all there is time for as there are usually only one or two therapists for several hundred children in each school or district.

if you are so worried about how much time is not being spent on your child, ask the individual therapist, teacher or counselor what you can do at home to help increase your childs skills, i did and it worked wonders for myself and my children
