We recently stopped in a great hostel/camp site just outside Rome called Camping Tiber.

They have dorms or shally type rooms, which are very basic, but the showers & toilets are really well looked after, it has a great bar and restaurants, really nice pool, market and a free shuttle bus to the nearest metro station.

The grounds are lovely, the booze is really cheap, free Internet and all for approx £10 a night per person. It really is excellent value for money.

There's a really friendly atmosphere to the place, and loads of travelers from all over the world.

The campsite has its own website, but we booked it on hostel bookers.

It takes about 30 minutes to get into Rome from the site, and costs four euros each for an all day bus/metro ticket. Although there is a Rome travel pass that you can buy for twenty euros. That also includes free entry into two attractions, not including the Vatican.

I really would recommend it, if you don't mind basic sleeping arrangements.

Hello,

Go to venere.com to check out all the different areas of Rome.  This site will let you look at hotels, apartments and B&B's, as well as other types of accommodations. As for areas to stay in, termini area will be the least expensive.  It is a nice area to stay in and close to a lot of attractions.

go to expedia.com I have never booked a hotel on their website but they have tons of listings, with prices, pictures, etc, plus reviews from us travelers, with good tips!
