Looking for a small/ medium car - suggestions? UK only?

I currently have a '97 Clio, and am looking for a newer and bigger car. I don't want a family car, but something in between the two sizes (like a Ford Focus, for example).

I'm planning on buying one new or nearly new, so only newish models please (ie last 4 years or so)

My only other preference is not a Renault. I've had enough of them. And I'd like something with a largish petrol engine (at least 1.4l) and manual gears.

Also, please don't suggest an Audi or BMW- my upper price range is about £13k

The new Fiat Punto looks pretty good...

Other cars worth a look are a Seat Altea & Toyota Corrola (very reliable)

i have a 2 year old Peugeot 307 and it's a fantastic car to drive and i have never had a problem with it ... i've got it with a 1.6 litre petrol engine, but the 2 litre diesel engine is a good one aswell

the Peugeot 308 is a nice car aswell, whcih is the updated version of the 307

a Vauxhall Astra could be a good one to look at aswell
