Question:

Looking for a used boat in Texas?

I am looking to buy a used boat that is lake ready. Preferably something under $3000.00. Does anyone know of a website other than boat trader and ebay that is a good source? I live in the san angelo area. Would consider renting a boat from a private party if price is right. Preferably inboard outboard. I have five small children and usually take my children to the lake without my husband so I need something dependable. If it needs minor work then I will consider it depending on what repairs are necesary. Please respond asap. I'm very serious about buying one.

  1. craigslist.

    **********  WARNING  *********************

Lot of people sell boats say they "don't have the title".

You will have the hassle of your life getting it registered if you don't get the title.

It's nothing like getting a lost title on a car -- TPWD (Texas Parks & Wildlife Dept) handles boat registration.

    No title, just walk away.

Outboard motors have separate titles from the boat.

Boat trailers, no title needed, just a bill of sale.

At a minimum, do a compression test on the engine, if the lowest isn't within 5% of the highest, walk away.

Ask the owner to start the engine, if he does so without hooking the lower unit up to water, walk away -- the boat's been abused.

  2. look in the local paper, a lot of privet owners who can't afford the gas are selling vary cheep.but make sure that you have the out drive checked before you buy., also look for local auctions, some great buys there.

  3. craigslist is an excellent source.

  4. Most people don't buy off ebay or anywhere else with out first seeing the boat, so they look within a 200 mile radius.  I like the idea of going to a couple marinas near where you want to use the boat.     Ask around, boaters are gabby, and someone will know which boat(s) are for sale, they will even tell you if anything is wrong with it.  So, take a drive out on Saturday afternoon, at worst you get a little fresh air!
