Your best bet will be an after market external marine cell phone antenna.  Sheakspeare makes one.  Not aware of any truly waterproof cell phones.  20 miles is pushing it for celluar coverage.

as landfall said, get a specific dedicated antenna for your phone.

Cell phones only work if they can see the tower. 20 miles out you need a 225 foot tall tower on shore, or an antenna on your boat high up.......

or, as another poster said, turn the d**n thing off and enjoy the water!

Cell phones are not dependable on the water, they drop calls, 20 miles out won't make it. You should have a good VHF marine radio, and a large antenna in case of trouble.

the matter is one of service coverage  i think

get a world phone  there should be roaming / it costs to make them but cruise ships  you can use your phone and it's further than 20 miles out  

i think there is a ship to shore number operator to dial ?  also be connected / get assistance

the satellites are used and the towers are getting better placed / results in better conenctivity

I make a point to get to a place each evening to check in, but the isolation is great!

Sorry don't know of a phone like that, but while you at it you might as well wish for one that also floats
