Looking for a wine?

I'm looking for a good wine to compliment a salmon dinner. I'm willing to spend at least $80 a bottle. Also it's a gift for a friend and I live in Alaska so I need the winery to ship the bottles. Thank you for all the help.

The fact that this French wine is called a Shiraz and not a Syrah lets you know they are going after the hearts of Americans. Another clue is that the wine is called the "hippo cuvee" which makes it nominally (to me at least) a "critter wine." As a rule, I'm trying to stay away from wines with animals on the front but my partner picked this up because he loved the name and so I was saddled with this wine with dinner. The Fat b*****d is 100% Shiraz and at around $10, it's not exactly a luxury wine. Sometimes a $10 wine can be surprisingly amazing.... with a big red fruit flush and a whole lot of .... aroma.

  3. Salmon calls for (maybe even craves) Pinot Noir, as it is a natural match.

With the oil content of the fish, you must be looking for a wine with enough acidity to compliment the fish, not get lost in it (like a white wine would do, unless it is a good CA Sauvignon Blanc or IT Pinot Grigio).  Also, wild salmon has a pronounced flavor - but of course is still a seafood protein - which is why a lighter red is the obvious choice (a white wine will just lay on the palate, not refresh it as a Pinot Noir will).

I would recommend the following Pinots: Pisoni, Domaine Serene Evenstad, Au Bon Climat (either the Isabelle Morgan or Knox Alexander), and Sea Smoke.  Basically, any great Pinot Noir from either the south of CA (i.e. Santa Lucia Highlands, Santa Barbara - especially the Bien Nacido vineyard - , etc.).

    Hope this helps...and bon appetit!

  4. Schlossadler wines out of Germany are a WONDERFUL addition to any wine rack.  I recommend the Pinio Gris for a light, slightly sweet white wine.  From what I know, they do ship to Alaska.

Locally, Kokopelli Winery in AZ makes a really nice Chardonnay, Reisling, Rhine Wine and (my personal favorite) White Merlot.  They ship--try them too!

  5. If you are willing to spend $80 per bottle, you are in luck.  There are some great wineries that will honor your wish.

There are 2 I would highly suggest.  With your Salmon dinner that you want to impress, you should go to higher end Chardonnay.  Higher end Chardonnay tends to be a bit more buttery and creamy, as compared to the more acidic dry Chardonnay.  In Napa, Far Niente (www.farniente.com) and Cakebread (www.cakebread.com) both make fabulous Charodonnay which are highly desired and excellent for your wine.  They both sell wines over internet, even though the quantity may be limited.

If all else fails, try one of the mail order wine stores I use.  Try Groezinger's (1800-356-3970), which is a wonderful small wine store with great wine selection at great prices, and they will ship almost everywhere in US.  Also can try www.winestreet.com.

    Cheers!

  6. Try a chardonnay or reisling from Beringer (California) ... it won't cost nearly $80, and that's a very good winery
