  1. Ireland is a great place for backpacking since it's a small country with a lot to see and do.  I always found it easy to hitchhike in parts of Ireland as well, and the locals are quite friendly.  There's also good rail links and buses around the country.  Definitely do it.

I recommend the west of Ireland, my favorite areas.  Co. Galway and Co. Clare especially.

  2. I just did that over Christmas.  Have you backpacked before?  Ireland was great for it, and we saw many other people doing it.  I would love to do it again.

  3. It's a great idea if your back-pack is long, cylindrical in shape, and holds 14 golf clubs.

  4. Ireland is an excellent country for all sorts of off-the-beaten-path exploration (backpacking, horseback riding, biking). There are amazing things to see and many places to go that most tourists never see because the roads don't go there.

One thing to keep in mind is the weather. Ireland is a temperate zone, but one that is prone to an amazing amount of rainfall every year. You will have days when it pours constantly (also known as Irish Sunshine) and days when it's absolutely gorgeous. You need to be prepared for a lot of incliment weather.

Depending on where you go, you'll find mountains, forests, peat bogs, farmland... and fortunately inexpensive B&Bs are available in nearly every large town if you don't want to sleep out.
