Question:

Looking for advise on travel from Prague to Hamburg Germany?

In Late June my husband and me are goning to spend a few days in Prague and then need to get to Hamburg for world cup soccer games.

Does it make sense to drive from Prague to Hamburg (instead of flying)?

How far is the trip?

Can we do it in 2 days and 1 night stop in the middle?

If so, where should we stop for the night?

Any nice or interesting places to see on the way from Prague to Hamburg?

Thanks for taking the time to help us! Mrs. R

  1. Well, you can drive if you have a rental car. Are you planning on driving back also? One way rentals through Europe are very pricy. Gasprices are also pretty expensive, about 3 Euros per liter, not per gallon!

If you decide to drive, you can make it in about 15 to 20 hours, depends on your driving. There are lots of interesting places to visit, I would recommend to get a "Lonley Planet" it's the best Travel guide you can find. I never travel without one in any area of the world.

You may also contact the "ADAC", the german automobile club. The Website is www.adac.de

They have advise on tollroutes and any other information you need.

Another way of traveling through Europe is via train.

They have a great train system in Europe. You may want to check with the Train company "Die Bahn" Website is www.bahn.de

Good luck and lots of fun

  2. I've lived in Germany for the past two years and if there's one site that I love to share with people, it is Mappy:

    http://www.mappy.com

Driving from Prague to Hamburg makes perfect sense and is actually not too bad of a drive. Mappy says that it'll take approximately 6 hours and 51 minutes. I've driven longer than that in a day. If you want to stop somewhere neat on the way there, you have quite a few choices (too many to list). Just take a look at the map on Mappy.

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you have fun doing it. Good luck!

  3. My personal suggestion is to take the train (I spent time living in both cities and moved from Hamburg a year and a half ago).  End to end, the trip will take you about 8 hours, and should cost about 75€ (double check bahn.de to be sure of the cost). The trip is a nice one through the countryside and with the cost of petrol, etc, I think it's worth it to go by train.

If you're looking for a stop-over, spend a day in Berlin.  Although Berlin isn't as cool as it once was, it's still arguably one of the most interesting cities in the world.  Have fun and spend some time in St. Pauli when you're in Hamburg!
