check out obedience schools, or a rescue group. Many dogs that are surrendered don't have bad histories, sometimes they just can't be kept

Petfinder.com, your local shelters, Animal Services or a breed rescue (search online) if you want a pedigree of a specific breed - all great places to get trained, assessed dogs and do a good thing for a dog needing a home.

You adopt --- you don't buy, doesn't get any better than that - for you and your new pet.

Try www.petfinder.com.  You can find a rescue in your area and some of them have their dogs in foster homes.  You can find out more info on them than if you just go to the shelter.  A rescue group can help match you up with what you are looking for and most behavioral issues will be known from the foster owners.

Shelters. A lot of time their adult dogs are already trained. My beagle was housebroken when I adopted him.
