Looking for an affordable beginners motorcycle. Any suggestions?

I'm looking for a bike capable of going on local highways and streets at least. I weigh about 140 and i am about 5'9 or 5'11.

I looked at the Ninja 250 and the Ninja 500. I've heard the Ninja 250 might be a little light for the highway. Also, are there any good naked bikes for beginners out there? Any other suggestions? Thanks.

  1. All 250 cc class bikes are "light" for the hwy. But see this:

When you are are a beginner, it isn't about power, but control.  You need to start slow and carefully.  Big bikes can easily kill you.  Eventually you would tire of 500 cc bikes, so using your logic, you might as well as start with 1000cc bike - NOT!

My first bike was just 400 cc bike, and on the first day, I almost killed myself when I accidentally popped a wheelie.  Also big engine bikes will intimidate the beginner and you will learn to fear the bike.

I've been riding sine 1982.  Most people who rode fast with me have long stopped riding.  I've since owned 3 bikes and still ride.

Respect the dangers and DON'T go in thinking SPEED, SPEED, SPEED.

    Good Luck...

  2. 250's are light but will get you around for short trips on the highway. i started on a 250 honda rebel. great bike to learn on. a 250 is enough power to get experience and light enough to control. also 250's are cheap. get a couple seasons in on something smal then move up if you want.

  3. Yeah if your young why go for a sporty bike straight away?

    I rekon go for a road/trail bike like a Wr250 or Wr450

this way you can take shorcuts thru the bush n have sum fun
