Question:

Looking for an alternative to the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECs) for non-verbal autistic child?

My 6 year old autistic nephew is non-verbal and I found a picture communication system that really interested me on the internet, but then I lost the link, and now I cannot locate it. It is different from the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It is a lesser known system and looked to be by a small company, where the picture system they produce is their only product. I would really like to purchase the system and appreciate any help in locating it. Or even help in finding a site that lists different kinds of picture communication systems out there. (All my searches keep turning up PECS, which is not what I am looking for). Thanks so much for any help!

  1. I use pictures symbols all the time in my music therapy sessions, but they aren't part of a formal PECS system.  The general idea that you are using visual, rather than verbal representations for items is really the important part.  You don't need a formal system for that.  I generally use board maker as much as I can, but sometimes I just have to hunt clip art sites online to find an image that I need.

Honestly, I find that tailoring the "system" to be what your child best responds to, is more important than it having a brand name attached to it.

  2. Hello, not sure if this is what your looking for, but I thought I'd offer my input.  I work as a one-on-one for a severely autistic student, 8 years old.  He didn't care for PECS, didn't like carrying at around.  So we use icons that are a bit different which we make ourselves with a program called Board Maker with Mac.  This is the link for that:

There is also a program called TEACCH that I took a short training on it.  It was interesting, just haven't had the oppurtunity to learn more about it.

Hope that helps and good luck! :)

  3. I have included quite a few links that i found by searching for Augmentative Picture Communication.  I hope you are able to find what you are looking for.

We used both this and PECS on the road to getting my nonverbal daughter to speak, both are awesome.

    Good luck

  5. My son, who is 14, is non-verbal. He does know some sign language, and is able to utter a few 1 or 2 syllable sounds consistently enough to use them as words,

I have played around with the idea of building some small webpages with picture links to recorded phrases, so the pages can be loaded to a pocket pc and used ike a poor mans ACD. I haven gotten the bugs worked out of it, but is seemes to be workable.
