I have been a Pro Photographer for 10+ Years. I now have a few schools I do.

Is there a software that can be used to create a Text File from a folder of Photos?

Or is there an inexpensive software that I can use during capture to create a text file, or tie the photos together? (by Inexpensive I mean less than $3k)

Thanks

  1. I'm not sure what you want to do here Alan. If you mean you want to go into your picture file, take all the picture titles and create a database of them, Access and even Excel can do that, if you want you can even link back to original file, but its not strait forward, and I can't see a good reason for going to all that trouble.

I probably read your question wrong.

  2. DOS / Windows?

    - Open a command prompt window, aka a DOS Box (Run -> cmd.exe)

    - Navigate to the folder you want to get a list of.

    - type "dir /b" to get a "basic" listing of the files.

    - typpe "dir /b > these-files.txt" to do the same thing but route the output to a text file.  You should be able to copy right out of the text file into Excel.

If you do a dir /b /s it'll also dump sub-folder names and their files, plus the full directory name.  In a text file you can do a search-replace to remove part of the directory name if you'd like.

If this is something you're going to do a lot, I recommend a little power toy from Microsoft (linked below) called "Open Command Window Here."  Then, in explorer, you right-click on a folder and choose "Open Command Window Here" from the popup menu and a DOS box opens already in that folder.  Saves some time.

If you want to send me $3k for the advice, I take PayPal. <grin>
