Looking for an image editor

I'm looking for a image editor to fix up some old photos and do a little editing. However, I don't know what brands or downloads are recommended. Could someone give me some insight on what might be a good service or download to go with? Thank you.

  1. Take 2- both are free and depending on your level of experience, you may have more luck with one or the other. The Gimp is open source and free for all (http://www.gimp.org/) and Irfanview is free for non-commercial use (http://www.irfanview.com/).

  2. If you just need to do a little bit of editing, I would go with online image editors. This way you don't need to install anything and you can access it from any computer. Here are a few which I like:

    http://fotoflexer.com

    http://www.picnik.com

    http://www.flipmyphotos.com

  3. There are some online photo editors for free. Minor tweaking but effective.

There is Photoshop Elements for mac or PC. It's about 80 bucks and you can do photo correction along with image manipulation.

Since you're just starting, I'd avoid Photoshop (starts at 600 bucks) until you're comfortable with editing and feel you can move into graphic design, professional illustration or web interface creation.

iPhoto for Macs is free and is also easy to use.
