It was an apartment building fire - 23 people were killed. Dr. Ryder was my great grandfather on my mom's side of the family. Any information -a newspaper clipping about the fire, or an obituary, so I can follow up.

  1. You might start with the public library in Montpelier. They may have a historical collection, or local newspaper on microfilm.

      Kellogg-Hubbard Library

135 Main St., Montpelier, Vt 05602

         802-223-3338 (phone and fax)

         info@kellogghubbard.org

  2. They probably do not have obituraries archived online since it the fire occured in 1925.

If you go to Montpelier, there'll be a government building (I cant remember the name off the top of my head), or you could go to a library, and they will have the newspapers archived. If it's a public library, they should let you look for free. I'm not sure about the government building.

Take a roadtrip, that'd be fun. Bring any information regarding your great-grandfather (Birth/death certificates, something) in case they ask. But they should have a record of it in that town.

    Good luck!

  3. There aren't many people from Vermont hanging out here, but the VTGenWeb site is full of great genealogists who are usually happy to pull newsclips and obituaries. A local doctor dying in a fire is sure to have quite a bit of coverage back in that era. Start with this site.

Also check out the Vermont pages at http://www.genealogy.com

You can usually find a good local historian hanging out in the state and county pages.
